Haze is the ratio of scattered light flux and transmitted light flux that deviates from the direction of incident light through the sample, expressed as a percentage. Generally, only the scattered luminous flux that deviates from the direction of incident light by more than 2.5 degrees is used to calculate haze.


working principle:
When a parallel beam is incident on a medium (such as transparent plastic Yang), due to the non-uniformity of material optical properties, surface defects, non-uniformity of internal organization, existence of bubbles and impurities, the beam will change direction (diffusion and deflection), and some disordered light generated is called scattered light. Internationally, it is stipulated that the ratio of the scattered luminous flux passing through the sample and deviating from the direction of the incident light to the transmitted luminous flux is expressed as a percentage, which is the so-called haze. The sample with high haze will give people a more blurred feeling. When the light passes through the sample, it will also produce loss, that is, the transmitted luminous flux passing through the sample is always less than the incident luminous flux irradiated on the sample. The ratio of the two, expressed as a percentage, is internationally defined as transmittance.
The reasons for the decrease of transmittance are the reflection of light on the two surfaces of the sample and the light energy absorption of the full wavelength or part of the wavelength of the incident light. In the process of testing the haze and transmittance of the sample, the incident luminous flux (T1), the transmitted luminous flux (T2), the scattered luminous flux of the instrument (T3) and the scattered luminous flux of the sample (T4) must be measured.
Calculation method of haze and transmittance:
Light transmittance: TT = T2 / t1x100%
Haze: H = [T4-T3 (T2 / T1)] / t2x100%
The haze value H formula can be simplified as: H (%) = [(T4 / T2) - (T3 / T1)] × 100%
Relationship between haze and transmittance:
Haze and transmittance are two very important optical performance indexes of transparent materials. In packaging applications, hazy films may reduce the quality feeling of consumers, such as the appearance of packaging products. Generally speaking, the haze value of materials with high light transmittance is low, and vice versa, but not completely. Some materials have high light transmittance but high haze value, such as ground glass. Therefore, transmittance and haze are two independent indicators.
